President William H. Harris, PhD, officially crowns Ohio native Angel Moore as Miss Alabama State University 2010-11.

Hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends gathered in the Oliver-Dunn Acadome on Oct. 13 to witness the formal crowning of Angel Moore,  Miss Alabama State University 2010-2011.

With a theme of "Timeless Beauty and Splendor," the event rang reminiscent of a 1940's doo-wop performance.

Former Miss ASU 2009-10, Priyanka Banks, gave her final farewell and welcomed newcomer Angel Moore.

"It is with great honor and a humble heart that I pass the torch to you," Banks said. "You are an eloquent leader."

President William Harris, PhD, conducted the official crowning of Angel Moore by giving her the official cape and scepter and upon accepting her duties Moore and Harris shared the traditional first dance.

Moore performed a monologue themed heavily on heritage and the relevance of historically black colleges and universities, where she told the crowd,

"I felt rejected because my father rejected me, but at an HBCU, I feel like a queen, whether I have a crown or not."

Moore refers to HBCUs as "institutions who are consistently underfunded, underrepresented and underappreciated.  However, we still birth heroes." With phrases like "all we have is now," "what affects one of us affects us all," "each moment counts," and "if God is for us, who can be against us?" Moore implied a call to action.

Moore quoted Bill Cosby in saying, "The future is a dream, and the past is a ghost; all we ever have is now."

As for the crown, Moore calls it "truly an honor" and states that she plans "to represent this prestigious university with elegance, grace and sophistication."

She declared that this coronation would not be possible "if it had not been for my Lord and Savior, the student body of ASU, my colleagues, I thank you, thank you for your support.  Thank you for believing in me."

Moore also thanks her campaign managers, faculty and staff, her adviser Sheyann Christburg, the Dramatic Guild, the theatre arts department, Dr. Tommie Stewart, Bertin Martin, First Attendant Erica Little and Second Attendant Bianca Culver for being her "support system," and the Moore family "for being my number one fan."

The university's residence hall, campus, fraternity, sorority, and other organizational queens were also acknowledged during the ceremony.

A host of performances, including a live band and gold spray-painted men, added to the "splendor" of the evening.

Senior psychology major Jessica Ford referred to the evening as "really pretty" and "the best I've seen so far."
